Amateur cinema, captured on formats such as 8mm and Super 8, possesses a unique visual magic that no modern digital camera can exactly replicate. However, the acetate physical medium is extremely fragile. Over the decades, film suffers from chemical degradation, shrinkage, and the risk of breakage, making every playback on an old projector an unnecessary risk to the integrity of the material.

At Stionhub, we understand that these reels are not just pieces of plastic, but the visual legacy of generations. Therefore, we implement a frame-by-frame transfer process that avoids the mechanical stress of conventional projectors. Our goal is to move the light and color of your home scenes into a secure digital environment, allowing your children and grandchildren to enjoy these images on any current screen without endangering the original.

Who is this digitization service for?

Our amateur film transfer service is specifically designed for those who possess film archives that have remained stored in boxes for years. We serve families wishing to organize their visual family tree, rescuing weddings, baptisms, and trips from four or five decades ago. We also collaborate with local historians in Málaga and cultural associations that safeguard audiovisual material of testimonial value for the city.

Likewise, it is the ideal solution for independent filmmakers or photographers who worked with analog film and need to migrate their works to digital formats for editing, archiving, or exhibition on modern platforms, ensuring that the resolution is sufficient to maintain the artistic quality of the original material.

How we perform the transfer process

Film digitization is not a simple recording of a projection screen. To achieve professional quality, we follow a rigorous technical protocol that ensures each frame is captured with the maximum possible sharpness. We use specialized scanners that treat the film with delicacy, avoiding scratches and ensuring that image stability is constant, eliminating the jitter typical of old projectors.

Once the image is captured, we perform a basic adjustment of contrast and color levels to compensate for the natural fading that film dyes suffer over time. The result is a fluid digital file, with a frame rate consistent with the original recording, ready to be stored in the cloud or on modern physical media.

01

Reception and Analysis

We inspect each reel to detect breaks, fragility, or the presence of mold before starting the process.

02

Technical Cleaning

We remove surface dust and particles using non-abrasive methods to avoid spots in the final archive.

03

Frame-by-Frame Scanning

The film passes through a professional scanner, capturing the image digitally without the need for projection light.

04

Export and Control

We generate the final file in MP4 format, verify the video integrity, and prepare the delivery.

What the client should prepare before delivery

To speed up the process and ensure the safety of your belongings, we recommend that reels come organized. If possible, label each reel with a name or approximate date. This allows us to deliver the digital files with consistent names, facilitating the subsequent organization of your family archive.

It is fundamental that you inform us if any reel has been exposed to humidity or if you have noticed a strong smell (characteristic of vinegar syndrome), as these materials require special handling and a prior stabilization time before scanning. If you have a list of contents or an index of the films, please attach it to your order to avoid confusion in the nomenclature of the final files.

What you receive upon completion of the service

Upon completing the digitization, you will recover all your original reels in the same state they were delivered, properly organized. As for the digital material, we deliver files in MP4 format (a standard compatible with any device) or higher formats upon technical request. These files are delivered preferably via a secure cloud download, available for a determined period, or on a flash drive provided by the client.

Each digital file will bear the name corresponding to the processed reel. Additionally, the client receives confirmation of the number of meters processed and the total duration of the recovered material. The result is a clean, stable archive ready to be shared via WhatsApp, email, or social networks with the rest of the family.

Delivery times and urgency management

The average delivery time for amateur film digitization is 10 days, although the final time depends on the volume of film meters and the complexity of the material's state of conservation. Once the order is received, we confirm the exact delivery date after the initial inspection. If the material shows serious damage requiring manual repair (splicing), the deadline may be slightly extended.

For clients who need their memories urgently for a family event or anniversary, we offer a priority service. This service carries a 50% increase over the standard rate and significantly reduces the waiting time, prioritizing the scanning of your reels in our production queue. You can check the availability of this service through our contact page.

Exclusions: What is NOT included in this service

It is important to clarify that our standard digitization service includes image capture and basic level adjustment. It does not include advanced restoration of damaged frames, the removal of deep scratches in the emulsion, or the reconstruction of missing parts of the film. If your material requires deep artistic intervention, you should hire the additional Image and Sound Restoration service.

We also do not perform copies of commercial films, copyrighted short films, or any material that is not of amateur or family authorship. Furthermore, digitization does not include the creation of montages, video editing, adding background music, or creating narrations; we deliver the material exactly as it was captured on the original reel.

Price calculation and VAT application

The cost of amateur film digitization is calculated strictly per linear meter of processed film. This ensures that the client pays exactly for the amount of material that has been digitized, regardless of the physical size of the reel. The prices indicated in our table include the 21% VAT applicable in Spain, breaking down the net amount for professional clients or companies (B2B).

For large volume orders, we recommend requesting a detailed quote. Payment is managed according to our terms of service, requiring a prior deposit of 30% to start the work process. Once the scanning is finished, the remaining balance is collected before the delivery of the digital files and the return of the originals.

Frequently Asked Questions about Amateur Film

What happens if my film has mold or is deteriorated?

If the film shows mold, do not attempt to clean it yourself, as you could scratch the emulsion. We evaluate the material and, if possible, perform a technical cleaning. For more information, consult our guide on moldy films and what can be saved.

Can the digitization process damage my original film?

On the contrary, our scanning method is much safer than using an old projector. The scanner moves the film at a controlled speed and without the intense heat of a projection lamp, minimizing the risk of breakage or burns.

In what resolution are the files delivered?

We deliver files in a resolution optimized for modern screens that preserves the grain texture of amateur cinema. The standard format is MP4, which offers a perfect balance between visual quality and file size for easy storage.

How is the digitized material delivered to me?

The most efficient way is through a private cloud download link, where you can safely download all your videos. We can also transfer the files to a USB or hard drive that you provide along with the reels.

If you have questions about the number of meters in your reels or wish for a prior assessment of the state of your films, we invite you to visit our office in the center of Málaga or write to us at [email protected]. We are committed to the preservation of the visual memory of our community.
